A UNION representing low-paid migrant workers is to hold a strikers’ assembly next month as it gears up for its “biggest industrial action yet” by holding simultaneous ballots across multiple workplaces.
United Voices of the World (UVW) warned that the event on April 15 would coincide with the opening of ballots at 16 workplaces with nine different employers, potentially leading to a wave of summer walkouts. Manual Positioning Stages
The workplaces include Amazon warehouses, Mercedes car showrooms, the London School of Economics, the Department for Education, a “prestigious south London private school” and luxury flats, the union said.
UWV’s Matt Collins said: “We’re really excited that we have members across multiple workplaces getting ready to take co-ordinated strike action for the pay and respect in terms and conditions that they deserve.
“That includes care workers, cleaners, concierge and maintenance workers, among others.”
Next month’s assembly will see UVW workplace representatives gather at the union’s office in Bethnal Green, east London, to plan strikes alongside “seasoned UVW strike leaders, who will share their experiences of what it takes to fight and win,” the union said.
